I hated alicorn Twilight. The whole concept blew my head-cannon to shit. but the more I thought about it and removed myself from it I came to like it more and more.
Now I personally LOVE the idea.
Not because she is getting an upgrade, not because it fits my head cannon (nonononono my beautiful head-cannon) but because of what it implies for those who the show is actually targeted to.
5 year-old girls.
Twilight is ascending to the throne because she has mastered the elements of harmony, she is loyal, kind, honest, joyful, and generous and because of this she gets to be a PRINCESS
Every little girls wants to be a princess.
So, to them, if they are kind, loyal, honest, joyful and generous THEY GET TO BE A PRINCESS
This will mean that you don't have to be born into princessness, you can BECOME a princess. It takes a lot of work and the help of your friends but eventually they can get there.
So girls (and some lose boys) will realize roles in life aren't set from the beginning, they can achieve whatever the hell they want, and climb as high as they want, even becoming a princess.
And I realize, this show is meant to teach kids life lessons and not service my head-cannon so all the power to the writers for keeping the show centered on that.
TL;DR:
Twilight is becoming an alicorn to teach an important lesson to little girls and boys while highlighting the issues our own brony community holds. Don't like it? Tolerate and love the idea because that's what Twilight would want you to do.
Keep Strong and Brony on.

Other than that, I almost 100% agree with you!
P.S.: THE GAME!
yay~
